Main Event Series Opener
3 Palms hosted round 1 of the Main Event/District 20 Championship series, and it started out with a bang. Riders came from all over, check this out...
297 entries from the greater Houston area. 50 entries from East Texas and Louisiana. 38 entries from Central and South Texas. 12 entries from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. 3 entries from outside Texas or Louisiana.
Starting off in the novice class. Neiheiser, Malhmann, Stockland and Guzak all had success at the summer nationals and all their training showed off, by them going 1,2,3,4 in a stacked 250 C class with a total of 34 riders.
A bunch of 50 riders showed up and it was Jason Stubbs and Tommy LeClere out front of the 4-6 class, while Trevor Spencer took the top spot in the 7-8 over Brae Bergdolt from Central Texas and Superman who is just a few days out of his cast from a broken leg. In the 50 Open class Bergdolt got the win over Superman, Luke Kirtly and one of the youngest riders out there Tommy LeClere.
Vann Martin said goodbye to the B class and hello to the A class by winning the 250 A class, but it was not an easy victory as he battled with Honda of Houston teammate Kyle Swanson. In the 450 A class it was full time college student Ryan Grantom with the early lead and he stretched it out over Fernadez and Doss. By the time Swanson and Martin got into 2nd and 3rd, Grantom had about a 6 second lead. They tracked him down with Swanson getting around him quickly as Martin got hung up with a lapped B rider that was double gatted with them. Finally Martin got around Grantom and the HHR riders went 1-2 at the end.
The 250 B class was won by Dillon Dufrene with Forrest Player near by for 2nd. Austin Reed and Cody Haverfield turned in some good lap times for 3rd and 4th.
There was some impressive riding in the 65 classes, but none more than John Hileman. There is only a handfull of riders that have cleared the finish line table at 3 Palms on a 65, and now Hileman can add is name to that short list. He can jump and he can corner too. Huge leads each time out! 50 winner Bergdolt was impressive and finished 2nd in a field of 20 7-9 year olds.
We all know Kaitlyn Morrow is amazing. I got to the track at 1:30 and notice the track is open for general practice and see Kaitlyn put in an eight lap moto before 3 hours before race practice starts! Then she goes out a holeshots on her Supermini in the Womans class and holds off 3 Palms local fast girl Gabby Morales for the win. Kaitlyn also won her qualifing moto in Supermini, but had problems in the main and settled for 7th.
Louisiana resident Barron Ballard got a couple in 85 wins, with a victory over Scott Haver and Dustin Eaton in the 9-13 Open and a win in 12-13 over Devon Oxsheer and Cameron Kothman. Oxsheer ended up winning the supermini class over Pinball and Justin Walker.
The Vets were out in force with the addition of a few new classes for them. One of those new classes in the Over 50 and Dave Martin piloted his HHR 450 to the win over teammate Andy Munroe. Some of those guys struggle with night races and 3 Palms did a good job of making the lights work better. I commend all of them for showing up in a young mans sport. Espy controlled the Over 30 A, while Stony Horn was looked strong in the Over 40 A/B, while Shannon Day cruised to the Over 40 C/D. Jason Pierce put is KTM in front of the Over 35 Amateur.
I was busy most of the night so I missed a lot of the race action, but I did try to check out as much as I could. Please fill in any of the classes I missed or, add to any of these classes.
I know one thing, the riders in District 20 are excited about the Texas District Final at 3 Palms Oct 29 & 30. The District 41 (North Texas) Series and the District 42 (West Texas) Series will be kicking off soon. By the turnout of our Round 1, those other districts have there work cut out for them!
